Q & A Session
Practioners
in Charlottetown, PEI, Canada, were asked a series of questions
about their particular practice or therapy. The following are
all of the answers provided by Rev. Sandi King, Spiritual Counsellor.
There
is one fundamental element that makes spiritual counselling different
from traditional types of counselling - That is the belief in
a greater power - a belief in God. No matter what we call this
power - the super consciousness , the great mystery, - it is a
belief in God that can bring order to chaos. It is the understanding
that there is a unifying influence in the universe, a purposefulness
that helps the Spiritual Counsellor stand apart.
Coming
from this fundamental belief in God, the Spiritual Counsellor’s
approach starts with a few basic assumptions:
1)
Once we embrace the concept of a non-physical entity called God,
then it becomes easier for us to accept the belief that we are
souls - Spirit - encased in a physical body. That we are eternal
and infinite. A natural part of this understanding is the belief
that there is an unseen world that interacts with our own in some
way. Spiritual counselling deals with the individual as a soul
in a physical body limited by the physical world. This means the
counsellor recognizes the client as an eternal soul dealing with
the challenges of a physical existence.
2)
Life is purposeful. A belief in God brings order to the chaos
by helping us understand that life is purposeful. That all of
our experiences are meaningful. That everything is connected and
that things happen for reasons. Throughout our lives we are provided
with opportunities to learn and grow not only on a physical conscious
level but on a spiritual level.
A basic
part of this is the understanding that all aspects of our life
is a function of choice. We choose our families and the circumstances
into which we were born to allow ourselves the challenges that
we have chosen for this life. There are no mistakes -only opportunities.
Remember a physical existence is the great classroom. The Spiritual
Counsellor helps the client, a living soul discover the purposefulness
in events and challenges.
3)
As an extension of our understanding that life is purposeful is
the understanding that we live in a free will universe. That means
that we get to choose our path and make mistakes and grow. If
things were preordained there would be no value in living a life.
Right action must come from choice. If there was no free choice
then how could life be purposeful - how could we learn. This means
that the Spiritual Counsellor can empower client to take charge
of their life and to stop being a victim.
